Volunteer Program

Welcome to the Southampton Animal Shelter Volunteer program

Thank you for taking the time to inquire about our volunteer process. We have a two-step procedure. The first step is to complete an application, which you can you can do online (click here to get started), or come into the shelter to pick one up. Upon approval, the second step is to complete an orientation class, which the shelter provides weekly. The class acquaints the volunteer with the shelter rules and regulations. The class trainers teach basic techniques on how to work with the animals, kennel procedures and safety protocols.

We have many opportunities for participation by our volunteers. There are fundraising events, socializing cats, walking dogs, grooming, adoption events, bake sales, kennel tour guides and dog training classes.

For those volunteers that want to learn additional skills on how to work with the dogs, we provide training classes to support that effort. Presently at the shelter, we have three levels of volunteer dog handlers. The first level is beginner dog handler. The behavior department teaches basic dog handling techniques. This class consists of loose leash walk, working walk, sit, down, stay, and come. Upon completion, the volunteer is tested and then moves to our next level.

The level two dog handlers are what we call pack leaders. The behavior department assigns specific dogs for the pack leader to work. Classes are provided to help enhance the pack leader’s skills. The AKC has a Canine Good Citizen Award in which our pack leaders work towards achieving that goal with their dogs. This award helps our dogs become more adoptable and social. Once the pack leader and dog pass this test, the volunteer becomes an advanced pack leader.

In the past year, we have seen the results of how our volunteer program has helped our dogs and cats become more adoptable. Our volunteers provide socialization, care, support and love. I invite you to join us and become part of our program. Come in and visit our facility, speak to our staff and meet our animals. It is a wonderful opportunity to share your love with our animals until they are adopted into their forever home.

I would also like to thank all the volunteers that have freely given their time and energy to the shelter. We appreciate all your dedication and I am sure all our cats and dogs would be waggling a tail in gratitude.

Thank you again, Regina Martini, Volunteer Coordinator
